STEPHENSON-STEVENSON Vie For Elettioii As SG PreskiMi Direc.tion which has not been sought by past Presidents of the-Student ..Government. In this- light* they should take . more responsibility for det ermining what they will le^- - islata instead of waiting ( for the executive branch to determine how the government will, be run. ‘.The'idea of a StuderTii' Age 19. Graduate, Asheville High School, Ashe ville, NiC. (graduated with honors). Sophomore (she has the credit hours). Classics major, B.A, program. Experience: Freshman class senator, 1973-?l;* Copy editor. The Summit. 1973“7i4-* I'/ITNP disc jockey, August 1973-E)ecember 1973. lumber. Student Government Select Committee on Faculty Evaluation. Member, Student Governraent ad hoc Committee on birth control. Member, Student Government Com mittee to re-write The Rid^eru^er Policy State- ment. It'-lem'ber, Editorial Board, The OTC-A Free Press. Writer, artist and car toonist, The UIJC-A Free Press. Platform: ”I thinlc the University can do bet ter. UlTC-A can provide more of a service to the region and the state by remaining true to its liberal arts tradition. Duplicating programs available at West- ”^n Carolina University is not the path to greatness. U1^^C-A has a tradition of academic excellence. Stu dents, faculty and adrain- istration must work to maintain excellence and at the same time create an atmosphere more responsive to student needs. North Carolinians were acting wisely v/hen they established a liberal arts campus here for The University of ITorth Carolina. ^Ve have a good basis on which to build, and we ought to do that. The taxpayers of North Carolina deserve a good liberal arts school in the state-sup ported higher education pro gram. Ul'TC-A can be a star in the state*s educational crown." Proposals: There needs to be more student involve ment in the decision-making process, especially on the Academic Policy Committee, which has no student mem bers. Students are in a . good position to know what needs to be done in this area, and the faculty and administration should con sult with us in good faith on these matters. Student evaluations of their professors should be used by the administration in deciding who to keep and who to fire. I am afraid Dr. Riggs has taken to dis missing those professors who get high marks from students ^ on the evaluations. This should be changed and can be be, if students and their governmen.'b ‘talco a stand on the issue. Evaluations results should be public. I am opposed to the new mandatory food plan for dormitory students. We should work together to formulate a new plan equi table to the students and their needs. Members of the student senate and students at large need to be consult ed on this, instead of there being unilateral decisions handed dovm from on high. In general, the UNC-A Cantus needs to become a more dynamic place. Every day talent is being wasted that could work to solve problems in student life and university policy. By deny ing students effective ac cess to campus decision malting, the University is wasting its most abundant resource. Students can and will work together for prog ress if they thinlc the ad ministration is taking them seriously. The Student Government presidency con provide the leadership for ■dynamic change and innova tion, £ind we could see UlTC-A bocome a happier place, providing a better education for the people of the state. : STEVENSON I am running far Student Government president because I feel that the students need an elected leader who would be responsive to more than one point of view. iV;y major objectives would be to strenghten the orfranization of Student CIov- ernment, to improve the com munications between Student Government and the students: with special attention to the commuter students, and to pro tect student rights as is the duty of any student represen tatives . My plan to strenghten the organization of Student Government includes the ap pointment of those workers who are not dawdl^ers to any executive commissions. The social commission is a dif ficult job to maintain be cause of the limited monies with which we must support Student Government activities. My plan is to place more of the additional monies that will be coming in to the stu dent activity fund into more quality entertainment. Dan ces, films and other social events will be planned well in advance of their occur ence. They will be schedul ed so as to assure no con flict with other activities that are held on the campus. I plan to rely on the Student Senate for a cer- •tain amount of direction. ! Government newsletter ori- . ginated during the first dis- \ cussipn of■the Free Press* j My intentto publish cam- ’ pus activiti-es and items of interest in this Student Gov ernment newsletter, I would have the “Student Government Secretary write up a schedule ; of activities which would in- ' elude both Student Government activities and campus activi- , ties. It would be similar to i the campus bulletin, only it will be mailed to all student I at the beginning of the month ■ yet it would cover activities ' that have been planned for the entire month. If there arose a need to print infor mation concerning the Student Government prior to the first of the month, then the Stu dent Government Newsletter could be mailed more often 'Those of you that know me realize that I am a person who speaks my mind and that I support the increasing of in- ; ’^olvments and interests of .students'in the decision mak- • ing processes which affect students on'.this campus. i.iOst of my. editorials vali date the fa,ct that I spoke out for students rights in all of the eighteen issues of the Rid^erunner which I I edited. I have spoken out ; against u.sing students as ■ token members of campus com mittees in a Ridgerunner ed itorial which was published last yea.r when the Instrument of Government was being con sidered. I also spoke to pre, serve the type of quality ed ucation which UNC-A provides for us in the wake of plans to tu.rn UNC-A into an exten- tion of A-B Tech, I have con demned the Athletic Depart ment for its various discri minations against female As to tHe amount of time 1 shall-have for my duties next year if eleated, I need 2^ horrs to graduate from UNC-A with a double major in Psychology and Philosophy. I have already made plans to attend summer school thus cl imating nine of these hours. Therefore my course load for next, year will allow me plenty of time to,fulfill the duties of Student Government Presi dent, I have applied for res idence hall proctorship be cause I support myself and I need the money that the job pays to finish my last year at UNC-A.' •My plan for governing and my commitments have been pre-, sented to you. Please vote for me, Zollie Stevenson, at the polls on Wednesday, imNK ^ou.
